I’ve always been a fan of dresses and skirts over pants and shorts. But now that I’m pumping every few hours, I tend to gravitate towards clothes that make it a bit easier and right now- they are shorts.
This is pretty much my go-to outfit: shorts, plain tee, perhaps a necklace, and sandals. Super comfortable and practical.
Shorts have always been tricky for me because the inseam is either too short (can we say chafing anyone?!) or too long, which isn’t very flattering on someone that is only 5’5” and doesn’t have skinny thighs. After a lot of trial and error, I’ve discovered that 4 inches is the perfect short inseam for me. But where to find them?!
Enter the J. Crew boardwalk shorts. Elastic waistband. Super fun colors (and prints!) and comfortable to the max. But they only came in 3 inch and 5 inch options. I opted for the 3 inch version and had them altered…by my Momma. (Thanks Mom!!!)
These shorts are made really well so that you can let out hem to create a slightly longer inseam without them looking “altered.” She also sewed down the pockets (which I wouldn’t use anyways) and it made for a more slimming effect instead of the pockets “poofing” out, especially after the fabric creases after a day of wear. Much better!

I am a big fan of 4 inch inseams too. Loft has some. I also get Old Navy’s 5inch ones and either hem them (very easy to flip up the hem one inch) or cuff them. These ones are adorable on you!
That’s true- I was lucky the shorter inseam had extra fabric to add to the hem, otherwise, I will look for 5 inch shorts to bring up a bit next time! Loft has some classic colors/prints for sure!
Let me just say we both have the same sense for color in style! Ha! I wore a similar outfit last Thursday out to dinner with my girlfriends. It was a Pinterest inspiration look I must say. You can never go wrong with black and red! I’m a fan of the 5′ inch shorts and the ON ones are SO comfortable this summer!
I love it! Old Navy does make some cute shorts at various lengths- I love their patterned shorts too! Great prints!
Shorts can be so tricky! I often find that they’re just too….short. These ones look perfect. A classic, comfy length. Great colour too!

I feel like they get shorter and shorter each summer…so frustrating! Glad I found these- thanks Alecz!
I totally agree, 4″ is the best inseam length! Gap has some really great 4″ shorts right now in several colors/patterns. I bought three pairs a few weeks ago (two are their Weekend shorts in navy and white, and a pair of their tailored shorts in black). I’ve been wearing all three pairs nonstop ever since.

Oh I will have to check out the ones from Gap…I only have solid colors so prints would be great!
4″ inseams are the perfect length for shorts! Love this black and red combo!

Thanks Jill- it’s a fun and vibrant color combo for sure!
As much as I love shorts, I dislike them for the same reason as you. I ‘ve found my comfort zone to be 4-5″ inseam. I buy a lot of shorts from Loft since they seem to have a good selection at this inseam. Love these red shorts on you!

Loft is the best when it comes to inseams…they get the modern woman I feel! Thanks for reading!
