If you’ve read my blog over the past few years, I used to share a TON more outfits than I’ve have been lately. These days? Not so much. I attribute it to a few things: I no longer work in a traditional office environment (I work from home full-time now, different gig) and most importantly: I’m a momma! This means my style has transformed in a major way. I’ve swapped pencil skirts, blazers and heels for jeans (or yoga pants), cotton tees and flats. Casual and practical all the way.
So while I don’t have any fancy or what some consider to be “blogworthy” outfits, I still personally find inspiration from other Mommas and their casual looks. (Don’t we all need help getting dressed as moms?! You want something cute and put together, but realize that there’s a high likelihood that it’ll be covered in drool and spit up by the day’s end. #thestruggleisreal) So that’s why I plan to share my mom style or “momiform” as some people call it. I hope to post an outfit once a week– it may be casual, it may be a dressier outfit given the occasion, or if it’s just one of those week where I never wore anything but workout gear, that’s what you’ll see.
Life is busy, children’s schedules and needs are demanding, and it’s easy for your style to get thrown on the back burner. So I hope to share my looks and closet essentials- and hopefully we can draw some inspiration from one another!
And it won’t just apply to moms — it’s anyone looking to pump up their casual style.
So today’s look features a fun plaid vest I got as part of my December budget for crazy cheap- like $12! I’ve really become a vest person. It’s perfect for just enough extra warmth without overheating, and it’s a nice completer piece too.
I added a black long sleeve cotton tee underneath, although looking at it- next time I’d go with a white long sleeve…which I realized I need to add to my closet. (By the way–anyone have suggestions for a classic white long sleeve that isn’t see through and holds its shape?)
As always, I reached for my favorite jeans from Madewell (and a top purchase from 2015). Then I added some black booties for a little height and I was good to go!
And I’ve already got a few ways to remix this vest on my Pinterest board: pattern mixing with stripes, with a crisp white or cream sweater and fun necklace, and chambray and white denim. Just when you thought a plaid vest was somewhat limited…
Are you a vest person? Are you interested in seeing casual looks?

Cute outfit! I love your vest and those booties… are they comfortable? Are you wearing them with socks or barefoot?
Thanks Christina! The booties are incredibly comfortable. I’m not a fan of higher heels because I need more support, but these have a chunkier heel so I can go longer in them. I am wearing low cut ankle socks with them too. It helps that the booties come up a bit so you don’t see the socks peeking out!
DO you wear coats with vests? I’m more of a tunic and leggings girl. Currently trying to find booties to go with my black skinny pants/jeans for work and for going out– Maybe you should just shop for me :)
I only wear coats with the vest if it’s super cold out, or if I’m going to be outside for a while. Mainly add the coat for practicality/warmth when I need it!
And don’t tempt me…you know I’d love to be a personal shopper (or at least a Stitch Fix stylist!) Definitely check out Sole Society..they have super cute shoes. Aldo is another great option- I have some heels and cognac tall boots from there that have lasted a while!
What a cute vest! I have a red plaid one coming to me in the mail and cannot wait to wear it. I love ‘real’ outfits like these that are inspiration, but also realistic for everyday life.
Thanks Laura! I’m sure you will come up with a ton of great ways to wear it- you are the remixing queen!
Working from home all or most of the time has made a huge difference in how I dress. I actually started blogging with a dedicated fashion blog 6 or 7 years ago when I still worked in an office most of the time, which I laugh at now because I can’t remember the last time I did an outfit post! My outfits most days are some combination of gym clothes and PJs, unless I “dress up” in jeans and a t-shirt to run errands. This is way cuter than what I usually put together anymore, so maybe you can inspire your fellow work-from-home types too :)
I think I remember seeing some of your old outfit posts! But I agree- anything with a non-elastic waist (i.e.- jeans) is now dressing up for me. I kinda enjoyed putting outfits together though so I miss that aspect, but taking 2 seconds to get ready during the work week? I’ll take it!
I’ve become a vest person too! I think it’s because they can be easily thrown over tshirts for a more put together look without a lot of effort. They are so perfect for a casual wardrobe!

You said it- they are the best! And perfect for the fall/spring seasons when the weather isn’t quite sure what to do with itself :-)
I actually like it with the black t-shirt!
If you find the perfect white long sleeved tee, let me know! I have two from Target (these that are nice but I’d like them to be a little bit longer.
Funny- I had that shirt saved and keep checking back on it, but it isn’t available online or in store in my size. I’ve got some SuperCash in Feb at Old Navy, and I’m betting I can find something there…
