DIY Nursery Pegboard Diaper Organizer

With 15 months of motherhood under my belt, I’ve certainly learned a few things along the way. Gear you thought you needed, but never used. Items you wish you had no one ever told you about. Brands that work the best. Tips & tricks for getting him to sleep. Routines that work well. The list goes on and on.

One thing my husband and I knew we needed was a way to organize and store all of Bryce’s diaper essentials. I knew I didn’t want a standard changing table and a ton of clutter on the table surface, so we got creative with our storage. Our next step? We did some Pinterest-ing (yes, that’s a word in my vocab) and saw a great idea: a DIY nursery pegboard diaper organizer!

It’s a storage wall, perfect to match our Bryce’s nursery decor and looks like a little man’s workshop, but also functional since it holds his diapers, wipes and other baby essentials that we reach for often. We knew it would be a terribly time-intensive or expensive project, so we agreed: game on. And I’m finally getting around to sharing the tutorial on making this!

Supplies:
-2′ x 4′ pegboard handy panel (you can cut down)
-3 wood block spacers–> we used 1 inch x 1 inch x 2 ft (to allow space for hooks/accessories to be inserted)
-screws (to secure board to wall)–> make sure the heads are big enough so they don’t slip through the peg holes!
-paint for board
-pegboard hooks (options)
-peggable wire baskets: (option)–> we spray painted ours silver
-Tools: drill + saw + stud finder + level

Directions:
1) Determine the size of your pegboard. Use a stud finder to see what kind of space you have to work with on your wall and cut pegboard accordingly.
2) Pre-drill your spacers (and cut if necessary) so they won’t crack when you screw everything together. You’ll want to make sure you align them with pegboard so you can use one of the peg holes to go through the spacer.
3) Paint all the pieces. (This could also include wire baskets if you choose to.)
4) Once dry, hang pegboard level on the wall and screw through the spacers into the drywall & stud.
5) Hand baskets and insert hooks and fill with your supplies!

A few things I’ve learned along the way since we’ve had this for Bryce:
-make sure you have something flat/flush on the side where the diaper changing pad is so when you sit your baby up, they don’t hit their head on the baskets
-fill some of those hooks or baskets with a toy for them to hold to distract them during diaper changes
-store some hand sanitizer in there so you can clean your hands after diaper changes…so helpful!

Here are a few more shots of the finished product. We still love it, and while the supplies may have changed a bit along the way, it’s still super functional and will grow with him along the way. As he moves out of diapers, it can perhaps be a gallery wall like this one instead! Oh, the possibilities.

Another one of those things I’ve learned along the way is to focus on convenience. With a little one in tow, it’s hard to shop around town for the best deal on diapers. Since we regularly shop at Costco, it just makes sense and saves time (and money) to grab a box of Huggies. They are sold in bigger quantities, so it means less trips- plus a nice big, box for him to play in afterwards (bonus!)
