Last fall, the husband and I started talking about what we wanted to do with the living room space. The room is oddly shaped with a rectangular inset on the back wall, which was too small to fit a couch. Once we put our heads together, we knew what we wanted to do—use the space for a DIY desk in the office with custom built-ins!
In getting through this project, I took the creative director role, and my husband took the execution side of things. In other words, I had the “vision” and picked out the style, and he does the math to make sure everything fits and won’t fall apart. Good teamwork
Come January, we were ready to start making plans. I took to good ‘ol Pinterest to get an idea of what I was thinking:

I really wanted to have our office on the main level of the house, and this was the perfect space for it. For me, the office is “mission control,” where I do my blogging, emailing, couponing, Internet browsing, etc. so I wanted it to be centrally located (previously, we had a large desk in one of our bedrooms, but now that it’s gone, we have freed up that space and have another bedroom back!)
It took a little while to get this project done while balancing work and other commitments, but it was so worth it! Everything was custom built—drawers, cabinets, etc. The hubs even did the all the electrical/lighting work! (Hats off to my handy husband- he’s outdone himself!)
I’ll let the photos speak for themselves. SO happy with how it turned out!
To start, here was the space before…such an awkward space!

After getting some sketches and measurements in place, we got our materials and it came together slowly but surely with lots of nails, glue and white paint galore! (Huge thank you to my father-in-law, for supplying our raw materials and for “tech support” along the way. This was AMAZING and so generous of him!)

And then we started moving in and putting the finishing touches on! Still a few left to do (i.e.- put some photos in the frames!) but you get the idea..
And I LOVE how it looks at night- the hubs installed lighting at the top, as well as lighting under the cabinets to light up the workspace.
Izzy was cleared pooped from all this work! See her in the corner?
Here is what the view looks like on the other side of the room…
And below is an image that you can pin that shows the evolution of the desk!

It turned out so fantastic! And I am so happy for you guys that it’s finished! Have you used it yet?
I am really digging the soft feel of it with the pictures with the lights on. Looks so cozy.
I am not sure my desk could be in the front of our house – I try to keep in clean but sometimes… there is some clutter! :P
Well done. It turned out amazing!!!!! Gorgeous pictures. I need a space like that :)
