I’ve always been a fan of learning about other people’s routines – something about seeing a glimpse into how things run behind the scenes has always interest me. I’ve certainly picked up tips and tricks along the way to help keep the household running like a well-oiled machine. Today, I’m sharing 5 things I do as part of my nightly routine to make my days run easier. I’ve found that getting these things done makes for a MUCH smoother, less chaotic morning.
1. A load of laundry
My motto? One load a day keeps the Laundry Mountain away. Laundry is such an integral chore and a part of our role as parents. It can feel endless and overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! If we can really simplify the core areas of our lives (like laundry), it will make everything so much easier. Nearly every night I run a load of laundry, using Persil® ProClean® laundry detergent. We stock up on the Persil® ProClean® Original and Persil® ProClean® Sensitive Skin (for the boy’s clothes) detergents at our local Walmart. Their detergent is formulated to deliver a deep clean for life’s messy moments, and between a baby and toddler, we have plenty! Whether it’s my workout clothes, dressier outfits, stained onesies or Izzy’s dog beds, Persil laundry detergent has stain fighting enzymes designed to break down stains and deliver an exception deep clean with a powerful freshness that lasts long after wash. I’ve heard this ‘do daily laundry’ tip from a few different people, and finally decided to try it out a few months ago. It has been a game changer for me versus doing ALL the laundry on “laundry day,” getting buried under baskets of clothes to fold, and the worst part: going up and down the stairs to switch out loads (our laundry is in the basement and the bedrooms are on the 2nd floor). It turns out, it’s MUCH easier to do a small load of laundry each night, starting the load before the boys’ bedtime routine, then finishing before I head to bed so I can carry the basket up with me. This makes a dreaded chore not-such-a-dreaded chore.
2. A load of dishes
If the dishwasher is full, I set it to run overnight. For the large items like pots & pans, cutting boards, and Blake’s bottles/accessories I always hand wash in the sink. It takes a few minutes to put the dishes away, leaving a clean counter and sink free of dirty dishes, and it also ensures we don’t run out of any cooking supplies during meal prep time!
3. Wipe down surfaces
At the end of the day, I wipe down all the kitchen surfaces (counters, kitchen table & high chair) to clean up after all the crumbs and messes from the meals of the day. I use a DIY cleaning solution and it leaves the kitchen smelling great and sparkling clean. There’s nothing better in the morning than walking into a kitchen that is clean!
4. Prep food and coffee
I program our coffee maker so I have a pot of coffee hot and ready by the time I come downstairs. Having to deal with that and two littles in the morning is no fun. My caffeine is ready in the AM, and so am I! If it’s a school day, I also prep Bryce’s lunch the night before, thaw some baby food by moving from fridge to freezer for Blake, and pack up a lunch (usually leftovers or a sandwich) for T. It makes it easier to get out the door for all of us.
5. The 5-minute clean up
We encourage Bryce to pick up his toys, but if I’m being honest, that doesn’t always happen. Plus, there’s mail, school papers, etc. from the day and other odds and ends. So, I spend a few minutes and grab a basket and collect everything and get it in its place. It makes for a clean slate in the morning, and creates a relaxing space for me when I wind down for the night and hang out with T. If I don’t clean up the clutter at night, our hectic morning stresses me out, because then the mess gets bigger and bigger and then I really lose motivation. I find we all play/work/live better when we have a clean, clutter free environment (at least to start the day)!
