January has officially come to a close, which means I’m one month into this year’s #23in2023 clothing goal. (Read more about it here.) Above are some photos of outfits I wore. Lots of neutrals remixed, and accessorized with simple gold jewelry. It was a busy month after the Christmas season, and included a conference in Chicago, serving jury duty on a trial and working through a 40 Day Sugar Fast.
This month, I added one item to my closet. But…starting a fresh year and coming off of the end of year sales and stock ups was tough…old habits certainly die hard. But I really tried to style the items I had in my closet. But the sales emails, targeted ads, influencers on social media, Poshmark offers, etc. made it tempting to want to grab a few things. I did my best to unsubscribe, unfollow and simply write down items I found appealing so I could contemplate it over time, which did help.
The first item added to my #23in2023 was the Everlane ReNew Fleece Raglan Sweatshirt (exact on final sale; Get $25 off your 1st purchase here). I had always wanted this fleece pullover in this newer style from Everlane (their previously style had dropped shoulders and the raglan suited me better). Then I got a $25 coupon in my inbox and went for it. I’m still tempted by sales, and this was a good one. It was regularly $78 but was marked down to final sale and with my coupon I paid under $20 for it. (They still have several colors on sale, but I do recommend sizing up…I did after reading reviews and it nice and fitted on me when I went up to a large.) In the winter months in Wisconsin, it’s all about comfort and warmth…hygge stuff right?! This sweatshirt is warm without overheating, fits well and matches with everything from jeans or black denim to leggings galore. I’ve been wearing it a lot (3 times in the collage above) and think it was a good addition.
In full disclosure, I did have a pair of joggers on my list and almost bought some this month. I wear a lot of casual/athleisure clothing and wanted something besides leggings for when I was running errands or at my kids’ school. So, I researched and tried several pairs from Home and Kind review of joggers, friend/family’s recommendations and even finds from Costco and Aldi but none of them really wow’ed me or fit. In the end, I stuck with a pair I had from two years ago that I got on Amazon and realized they were the best fit and worked all along. I am considering getting them in an olive color to diversify my bottoms (I really only have denim or black or colored workout leggings) but I might opt to get them in a different style vs. a jogger.
It goes to show, though, that the spirit and intention behind this #23in2023 is to be content with less, utilize what I have and get more time back because I am shopping less. But in the hunt for these joggers, I found myself spending time and energy researching and ordering, trying on, returning, etc. which I became very aware of after the fact. I feel like I justified it because I wanted to be really purposeful in making sure I got the “right” ones to earn a slot in my 23 items for the year. So it’s a bit of a balancing act to me…or moreso me deciding if the item is even worth the time/energy or is a true need, or just wait next time until the right item presents itself? I’m keeping this learning in mind in regards to my wishlist items too– perhaps I shouldn’t try to seek them out so I don’t get exhausted unless it’s really a need and then just casually browse until I find something I truly like. Anyone have any tips on this?
I did also sell a few pieces on Poshmark, but unlike prior years, I am not counting that money towards any type of clothing purchase budget, as it will just entice me to spend. I also had to get a few branded pieces for work with our company logo on them, but that was with a provided gift card and is only worn a handful of times per year, so I am not choosing to count those towards my 23 items.
How did your January go? What did you add (or remove)? Any closet purging? What’s on your wishlist?
