Since I’ve been doing the Hungry Girl diet, many breakfast options include Greek yogurt. And no wonder- it’s packed full of protein and keeps you full until lunch! I’ve been sticking with the recommended plain Greek yogurt as the base and then you customize it based on the recipe—add fruit, nuts, cereal as toppings, etc.
But now that the HG diet will be over this week, I plan to continue to have Greek yogurt for breakfast…or even as a snack or dessert. But I’d love to broaden my horizons and go with a Greek yogurt that has a bit more flavor! Oddly enough, Yoplait must have been listening…
In a national taste test, Yoplait Greek 100 Strawberry beat Chobani Simply 100 Strawberry. So today, I decided to host a little Yoplait versus Chobani Greek Yogurt taste-off of my own! The hubs and I tested which brand has the best Greek yogurt. In order to find out which yogurt held supreme, I broke the taste-off into five categories: design, nutritional value, price, availability and (most importantly) taste!
Round 1- Design/Packaging: Both are nicely designed, but we prefer the red color palette of the Chobani package, which really highlights the strawberries. The nutritional info really pops to me too versus Yoplait. Chobani hits me, the consumer, in the face with the top line benefits for eating the product- natural ingredients, nutrition info at a glance, etc. Chobani wins.
Round 2- Nutrition: This was a close race as they were pretty similar on that front. Both have 100 calories (score!) and are a nice sized serving, but Chobani has 2 grams more protein (12 grams versus Yoplait’s 10 grams), and it has 2 grams less sugar (7 grams versus Yoplait’s 9 grams.) That said, I gotta give it to Chobani.
Round 3- Price: The Yoplait Greek 100 Strawberry yogurt retailed for $1.03 (and even better– it was on sale for $1 at two stores I saw), and Chobani Simply 100 Strawberry yogurt retailed for $1.07. Plus, I know I get coupons for Yoplait in the Sunday newspaper and I don’t recall seeing a lot of Chobani coupons. This one goes to Yoplait!
Round 4- Availability: I was able to find the Yoplait Greek 100 Strawberry yogurt at Target, Walmart and Jewel Osco (the local grocery store), while I was only able to find the Chobani Simply 100 Strawberry at Walmart. I don’t shop at Walmart that often (and probably wouldn’t make a special trip just for yogurt…gotta make it accessible!) Again, this one goes to Yoplait!
Round 5- Taste: First of all, I liked how the Yoplait had a reddish/pink coloring to it. It actually looks like it’s strawberry flavored. By just looking at the Chobani, you can’t tell what the flavoring might be. My husband and I both agreed that Yoplait tastes too “polished” or artificial. The flavor is definitely super sweet, but doesn’t taste like a real strawberry. Chobani, on the other hand, tastes more natural. Although it isn’t a strawberry flavored as Yoplait, it tastes richer and creamier, which we prefer. And no wonder—Chobani puts their benefits front and center on the package: no artificial sweeteners, flavors or preservatives. Only all natural ingredients, which I am not sure Yoplait could claim…
So all factors considered (and I consider taste to be a huge factor), we both went with Chobani Simply 100 Strawberry Greek Yogurt! I feel odd to say it since Yoplait sponsored today’s discussion, but just being honest!

Interesting! I always buy Yoplait because of the cost and availability. I don’t think I have given Chobani a shot yet!
Yeah Yoplait seems to be everywhere…AND they have coupons! But Chobani really did taste better to me..if it was readily available, I’d go with this brand for sure!
It’d be interesting to add in some ‘local’ brands to the contest…Trader Joe’s brand or the house brand at Mariano’s (Roundy’s)….I also prefer Chobani single serve cups with fruit on the bottom, but for big containers of vanilla greek yogurt for smoothies, etc. I like generic. I also hate okios for some reason…
Absolutely! I can’t WAIT until the Mariano’s opens up by me…it’s taking forever! I also love the Light n’ Fit Vanilla Greek Yogurt. I’ve also used plain Fage, but have to add sweetener and cinnamon to make it taste decent haha!
Wow! You really went all out with your review! It’s great! I have a feeling I’ll like the Chobani more, too, but we’ll see.
I did…but I have to admit- I followed some categories that other bloggers were using in their reviews too :-) I feel awkward saying Chobani won even though it was a Yoplait campaign, but oh well!
I disagree. I have been eating Chobani non stop since 2010. Used it as a part of a weight loss program. Mt Stop, and Shop ran out of the Pineapple Chobani, and I tried the Yoplait Blueberry, cherry, and Vanilla. I was Knocked out by the flavor. No longer a Chobani fan. It was always too bitter/ Love Yoplait now.
