Bri over at Work Clothes, I Suppose came up with a great Third Thursday Threads Challenge: Winterizing a Summer Item. This theme is particularly fitting because it’s FREEZING outside and I’m desperate to start wearing my spring/summer clothes! Case in point: yesterday’s post.
So what did I decide to winterize? Well, I LOVE to wear skirts and dresses so I immediately went for my Old Navy sleeveless dress! (Please ignore my ghost white skin. I hope to change that stat.)
Anyways, I love this dress- super comfy and dressy at the same time! But how would you wear this in winter, you might ask? Well here you go!
I even tried this look with a more colorful sweater from Old Navy (which was $5 a few months back when they were clearing out merchandise for spring stuff- woo hoo!):
I just added boots & sheer tights and a sweater and it made for a totally different look. Black tights would have “winterized” this look as well. I included the statement necklace because I felt like the caramel color sweater on its own would have made me look washed out….
So there you have it! That’s how I took my sleeveless summer dress and transitioned it for winter!
How would you winterize a summer item like a dress? MAJOR bonus points if you can winterize a swimsuit or shorts–that’d be pretty epic…

Love the sweater over dress look! I need to see if I have any dresses I can recreate this idea with :)
Thanks Christine…isn’t it awesome finding ways to restyle items you already have?! Thanks for reading!
I love both looks! Erin helped me winterize a summer sleeveless dress by wearing a collared shirt under! I love wearing my dresses, so I need to get more in the habit of this!
Thanks! Oh that’s a great idea too! So many more possibilities by adding some extra layers (although I need about 5 more layers right now…it’s cold out there!)
I love wearing sweaters over dresses! It’s like having a doubly large wardrobe.
Exactly!! Thanks for reading!
Love the winterizing look. It’s much easier to winterize something than to make it more springy, if that makes any sense. I’m doing a link up next thursday. HOpe to see you there.
Agi:)

Me too- way easier to winterize than the other way around!
Very cute! When did you get that dress? I love it!
Thanks Katie! The dress is from Old Navy (last summer). They had it in a couple different designs and I’m hoping they bring it back in new colors/patterns for this summer!
love the idea with the sweater, I recently did the same and I love that I can now wear my favorite dresses in the winter as well! great post!

Thanks Kate! Yes, it makes for SO many more outfits that way. Thanks for reading!
Hi! I found you through Tara’s linkup today, and you have great style! This is such a great way to style a summer dress and make it wearable all year round. =)

Thanks for reading- I appreciate it! I’m all about trying to remix/repurpose clothes in my closet- it’s kinda fun!
layering the sweater is so clever, and I’m with you on wanting to wear my summer dresses NOW.
so i just spent 20 minutes tracking down this photo of when I winterized some shorts back in 2011… http://www.flickr.com/photos/lydiaabate/5358827987/in/photostream/
OH.MY.GOODNESS. You were able to winterize shorts?! I am SUPER impressed lady!!!! That looks fabulous!
So cute! Putting a sweater over a dress is like doubling your wardrobe..haha. Thanks for linking up!

It totally is! Thanks Tara!
Looks great! I love adding boots and a sweater to my favorite summer dresses, too. Otherwise, they just get ignored for half the year. I’ve seen people wearing shorts with tights, and I think it is super cute, but I haven’t been brave enough to try it yet. I’m not really sure what occasion would be appropriate for that particular look. Maybe I will try it someday!
Exactly- love being able to wear things year round! I know Lydia from Chic on the Cheap pulled off a look with shorts and tights and looks fab but I don’t think I am brave enough yet either! I think that would be a little too “fashion-forward” for me to wear to work…but if I lived in the city it would probably fly! Thanks for reading!
I’m trying to figure out why it look me so long to figure out I could wear things OVER my dresses and wear them all year round. Crazy! And, yes, shorts with tights is a thing but I wore that for all of elementary school so I’d really like to avoid dressing like my 10 year old self…
LOL yeah let’s avoid our elementary school style like the plague! (Although it would be a funny April Fool’s Day post) :-)
Valerie this is amazing! I love love love the way you did this! One of my favorite techniques, but I especially love the bright sweater with it. Thanks so much for linking up :)
Thanks Bri!! Yeah it was fun to try the layering for this link up. It was a good one (and practical, given the crazy cold temps around here!)
