The husband and I took a couple vacation days to make a long weekend and headed up to the Northwoods of Wisconsin to spend some time with another couple at the family cabin! We started our travels on Thursday and stopped to see family, do a surprise Father’s Day celebration, and drop off Izzy for the weekend. The night ended with dessert nachos. (Yes, they are as good as they look.)
Once we made it the rest of the way, we relaxed, got some sun, grilled out, had campfires with s’mores and played some Cards Against Humanity. Also said hi to Cari the Caribou, a recent addition to the cabin…
While up there, three of us participated in the local 5k: Rockin Tomahawk. It was a smaller race, with about registrants in the 5k, and another 75 or so in the half marathon distance. We picked up our packets on Friday, which included a sweet long sleeve tee.
Then on Saturday at 9am, we were ready to hit the pavement. At 9:05, it started to rain. I always feel like a badass running in the rain…so fun!
Given the size of the race, there wasn’t any timing pad to cross at the start/finish so I relied on my watch. I didn’t really have a goal in mind, just wanted to see how my legs were feeling that day. After mile 1, we crossed some railroad tracks and entered a wooded trail that bordered a lake. Holy hill! There was definitely some challenging inclines and tricky terrain between gravel, sand and large rocks/twigs on the trail, which I was careful to watch out for. It was still raining by this point, so the pine needles on the ground got pretty wet and slippery. Hence, my slowest mile.
After I got past the trail, we were back to pavement and I was able to pick up my pace a little bit. We went past the finish line and around a small park and rounded a corner (which was sand) and had a straight away to the finish, which had a tent with post-race goodies: water, gatorade, bananas and trays and trays of Subway cookies. SO dang good.
My “official” time on the results printout at the race was 25:37. My current 5k PR is 24:14, which was done at the Iron Girl Tri (relay). So 25:37 wasn’t all that bad for no real training and unexpected hills/incline, sand and gravel! And…it’s faster than the other two 5ks I recorded on my stats page here so I was pretty happy with it!
And even better? I got a medal! 1st place in my age group F20-29! (And 3rd place female overall!) Yay for small races haha!
After the awards, we made a beeline to the grocery store, race bibs and all. It was time for some post-race fuel: beer and donuts. Decisions, decisions. Yeah, that’s how we roll.
Overall, it was a great weekend with friends. We love spending time at the cabin…and running a race up there made it even sweeter!
Any road trips for you lately? What’s the smallest race you’ve ever done?

Are those the Cheeseburger in Paradise chocolate nachos? Those are one of my favorite desserts, I could probably eat the entire plate myself haha.
YES Betsy!! They were SO amazing! I want to recreate them at home but wondering where I can find chocolate tortillas…hmmm!
What a gorgeous cabin! It sounds like you had such a fun weekend!
SO much fun! In fact, we will be going back soon for our 5th wedding anniversary- can’t wait!
Wow, way to go on your race, Valerie! That is so awesome. I’m not a runner at all – I have a really crappy knee that gets sore super easily, so I think I’m going to have to do some strength training to get it ready for running if I ever choose to become a runner, haha.
Thank you! Do you enjoy walking or something like Zumba? That’s much easier on your knees, I would imagine!
What fun! The cabin reminds me of going to summer camp!
YES! Except we didn’t swim in the lake or sing songs around the campfire. Next time though :-)
This looks like a blast, way to go on the race!
Thanks Ginny! So glad I got in some vacation time and a race!
What a fab weekend! Congrats on 1st in AG!!!!! :)
Thanks Kim! It was a sweet weekend- glad I got some running in too!
