So I’ve been trying to break out of my one-pattern-at-a-time cycle, and this is a great illustration of that! I would have worn the outfit on the left, which is fine…but when you add the scarf in the same color family as the cardigan- it really adds to the outfit!
Baby steps…I’m getting there so I can become an expert closet remixer! :-)
Shop the look:
Sandals- Target (exact, cute option)
Cropped pants- Gap (exact)
Tank- Gap (similar from Gap)
Cardigan- Target (exact)
Scarf- Eddie Bauer outlet (similar, similar)
Speaking of my closet, I took the time to rearrange it recently. For the longest time, I just had most of my clothes on hangers, organized by color across the closet rod. But I switched it up by organizing my clothes by type, THEN by color. So I have my short sleeve tops grouped together, then long sleeve tops/blouses, followed by cardigans and blazers, etc. Each of those sections is then organized by color before I move on to the next clothing type. It really helps me see my clothes in new ways! Funny how a simple change like that can do so much! (It not only helps me see potential outfit combinations, but it also helps me see where I may have a hole in my closet…which will help me when it comes to my clothing budgets!)

Cute outfit! This is exactly the same way I started trying pattern mixing, by wearing a striped shirt with a patterned scarf of some sort. And I also organize my closet by type first.
Thanks Inge! Yeah I can’t believe I didn’t organize it this way sooner- what a great method!
Yes! The scarf really takes the outfit to the next level. My closet is definitely organized by item and then by color. Which is how I know I own way too many blazers.
Thanks Erin! I love organizing that way…definitely helps me realize what I have too many/too few of!
Definitely agree that adding that patterned scarf added a ton to that outfit! Very very cute!! I’m in serious need of a closet re-org as well as a deep cleaning/purging. I’m hoping I can take a page out of Fran’s book and make some shopping money from selling a lot of the stuff I’m not wearing anymore!
Thanks Bri! Yeah it is so daunting to clean out the closet but is always so worth it in the end! I suggest consignment stores for the decent stuff and eBay for the higher end brand items- I’ve done well with it in the past! (And if that fails, you can always list things on your blog/Instagram…I know I’d be interested! :-))
First off, I LOVE that outfit! So cute! The scarf really gives it an extra bit of oomph.
I organize my closet the exact same way as you do now and I find it to be very helpful! I can easily find the type and color of shirt I’m looking for.
I can’t wait until I’m no longer pregnant and can get back to wearing some “normal” clothes again!
Thanks Emily! Yeah it really does- especially when you can see photos side by side! And I don’t know why I didn’t organize my closet like this sooner- I LOVE it!
I love what the scarf added to the outfit!
I do colors, but have it organized by work clothes, street clothes and workout clothes, rather than type. I just like to see all the colors!
