Runs these days look a bit different, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I have a great running buddy!
In an effort to stick to my fitness routine, I signed up for one race a month (July through October). July’s race was Antioch’s Run for Freedom over the 4th. It was Bryce’s first official race running with my in the stroller. Despite a crowded start, we finished in 26:18, 4th in my age group and first stroller finishers- woo woo!
The race for August is one I’ve done for a few years now that I really enjoy. It’s the Gurnee Days Trail Run 10k.
The details:
Gurnee Days 10K and 2 Mile Run/Walk
When: Saturday, August 13, 2015 at 7:30am
Where: Warren High School- O’Plaine Campus, 500 N. O’Plaine Road, Gurnee, IL
Cost (before August 5th):
10k: $22 for 10k (age 18+), $19 (age 17 and younger)
2 Mile Run: $17 (age 18+), $15 (age 17 and younger)
2 Mile Walk: $10 for all
Race day registration is also available from 6:15-6:45 on-site at the high school.
To register: Register at gurneeparkdistrict.com
What I like about the race:
1) Gorgeous, mostly flat (YES!) USATF certified course covering part of the Des Plaines River Trail on crushed limestone. Great scenery!
2) Smaller race, which means no overcrowded trails and wasting your energy dodging in and out of the crowds. Plus, they start the runners first and the walkers a couple of minutes afterwards (it’s a major pet peeve of mine when everyone starts at once.) Still highly competitive though with awards three deep (trophies for 1st place finishers in each age group + overall, and medals for 2nd/3rd place.)
3) A bountiful assortment of food and refreshments. YUM.
4) Great price for a local, certified 10k race. Plus, you get a technical t-shirt (which does run big based on my past experience). Nice bang for the buck considering some 5ks are well beyond $30.

Disclosure: I received a free race entry in exchange for promotion on my blog. However, I enjoy running this race and wanted to share it with you. All opinions are my own.
