Disclosure: I received an Aerie gift card as part of my relationship with the Quality Blue Community. All opinions expressed are my own.
Aerie, the sister company of American Eagle, recently released a new ad campaign called Aerie Real featuring completely real, unairbrushed women in an effort to challenge the typical, unrealistic supermodel mold. And it’s making waves in the media. For all the right reasons. Why? Because they are honoring real beauty and challenging the idea of who should or should be a supermodel.
Aerie’s new ads are unretouched. That means the girls you see in the ads are what they look like in real life. My hat is off to Aerie for featuring women and instilling self-confidence, showing that “the real you is sexy.” Although the models are featured in flattering poses with perfect lighting, the real beauty is that they are healthy and there is no Photoshop magic going on to remove imperfections, slim down thighs or chisel out ab muscles.
Women just have to turn on the TV, refresh a Facebook feed, browse through a magazine or walk past the storefronts the mall and see how much women are influenced in their self image by portrayals of female beauty as seen in the media. But like a breath of fresh air, Aerie encourages young women (their target demographic) to remain self-confident and healthy. Bravo Aerie, bravo.
I hope more companies follow suit after Aerie. I am happy to support a brand that celebrates women as they are!
So check out Aerie’s bras, undies and swim lines. In fact, I got a few fun things for myself (see below) and some swim bottoms from my May budget.
And to show just how serious Aerie is about celebrating women as they are, if you post a photo of yourself in an Aerie product or any Aerie product with the hashtag #aeriereal on Instagram or Twitter, your picture will appear on the Aerie website. Talk about getting real!

Absolutely- couldn’t agree more Agi!
That is such an awesome idea! It’s about time we start recognizing real beauty instead of airbrushed!
Amen sistah!
I love this! And how stunning are those girls!? It is so refreshing to see the occasional company making a move like this. That’s awesome that you got to try some of their stuff!
They are gorgeous women! Love the campaign and hope others follow suit!
Wow! That is fantastic! I love that they are doing that! I am always more inspired to see pics of real people I know being active (in their bathing suit or whatever), rather than a model, so I appreciate the “real” models!
Absolutely- it’s so refreshing!
Nice! I hope this becomes widespread.
Me too! They should spend some serious advertising dollars on this campaign- I think it’d go a long way for their brand!
I’m so glad they’re doing this! I think that these ‘real’ girls look a lot prettier than airbrushed girls any day!
I completely agree Maria!
Dear Aerie: I would love to try your products AND post pictures of myself online. Seriously.
Love,
Erin
Seriously, though, I think this is great! What a great company to work for.
Isn’t it awesome?! Yeah not too sure about posting pictures of myself…not that brave but very cool nonetheless!
I didn’t know Aerie was doing this – thanks for sharing! Maybe more companies will follow?
I sure hope so!
