I have been taking Pure Barre classes for two months now, with 15 classes under my belt. I have really enjoyed the classes and get a lot out of them (read my other Pure Barre posts here: Pure Barre 101 | 5 Ways Pure Barre Helps Runners).
Plus, Pure Barre is different from other workout classes I’ve tried. It’s dynamic, fun, has great music, and good energy to keep you going throughout the session. Class is structured so you can expect to go through the same sequencing in the order of targeted muscle groups, but different exercises for each class so it’s always fresh and keeps me on my toes (pun intended!)
With that said, here are my top 5 tips for Pure Barre newbies:
1) Embrace the shake. Not going to lie. Pure Barre is challenging, no matter what your fitness level. But if you go, and go regularly, you will see results. After a few classes, you will see your arms tone, legs lengthen and your seat lift! And don’t worry if you shake when you are in a move. That is a good sign! Just power through it and close your eyes or do whatever you have to do to focus in the moment.
2) Set a routine. Pick a studio that will work best for you and is near work, school or home. Identify the classes that work with your schedule and stick to it. Book your classes in advance online or through the Pure Barre app. Consistency helps you to be successful!
3) Ask questions. Some poses are definitely trickier than others, so listen carefully to the teacher’s words, especially during set up. Don’t be afraid to look to veterans in class if you are lost or confused, but make sure to bring your focus back on your own body. And be sure to ask questions after class (especially if you don’t feel the burn in the target area)- teachers are happy to help you! Those 55 minutes are all yours, so make sure you are getting the most out of your workout. Also, I know my my local studio, Pure Barre Deerfield, offers a complimentary 1 hr. 15 min. Breaking Down the Barre that is perfect for newbies so take advantage of those!
4) Bring a friend, or make a friend. To be successful with exercise, set some specific, measurable goals and have a friend encourage and help you stay accountable. In fact, my Pure Barre studio has “Free Friend Friday” every week, where you can bring a friend for any of the classes on Friday for…you guessed it- free!
5) Get the right equipment. The Pure Barre studio provides all the “equipment,” or bands, balls, weights and mats. I’d recommend selecting a couple pairs of weights so you have options during the arm exercises as well. Bring a water bottle, and be sure to wear form fitting clothing so you can check your form in the mirror. Lastly, I highly recommend a pair of sticky socks to help you grip the floor and keep you from sliding during class.
And to get you started on your Pure Barre journey, the gracious folks at my Pure Barre studio in Deerfield are offering one lucky reader a pair of sticky socks (your choice of color) and a free class!
Please note: the winner must be able to pick up their socks/take the class from the Pure Barre Deerfield studio. Enter using the Rafflecopter widget below:

Linking up with Olives n’ Wine.
A friend of mine just mentioned this to me yesterday! I’d love to give it a try!
I think I need to look into this (I know I keep saying that), but it looks like such a great workout!
I haven’t tried it yet.
