Let’s be honest…when I think about “me” time in its truest sense, I envision a weekend away with my husband or girlfriends – sans child. A beach vacation…one where you lay on a massage table, covered in white towels listening to the sounds of the waves. Ahh, paradise. Pure bliss.
Confession: I’ve never actually done this, but it’s what I dream about in those moments when Bryce wakes up multiple times through the night when he’s teething, or when I have changed so many diapers in a day that I’ve lost count. Don’t get me wrong- I love my little guy to the moon and back, but sometimes we just want a short reprieve. And that’s ok! But a regular weekend away isn’t always feasible, practical, or kind on the budget. So, I’ve come up with a few budget-friendly ways to find self-care in the everyday…those blissful moments that we treasure and rejuvenate us when we need it as Moms.
1) Give yourself an at-home spa night.
Light your favorite scented candle, take a long hot bath and do some at-home spa treatments. Do a deep conditioning mask on your hair. Put on a face mask. Soak your feet in Epsom salts. Exfoliate. Moisturize. You get the idea. And give yourself a manicure or pedicure! And while your nails are drying or your face mask is working its magic, kick up your feet, grab a snack and catch up on your favorite TV show (for me, it’s Pioneer Woman or Real Housewives—my guilty pleasure!)
2) Enjoy your favorite show or movie.
Have a movie/date night with the husband, put the phones and laptops away, and just decompress with your favorite movie, or rent a newer release (we just watched The Intern…finally. It was so good!)
Or…invite your neighbors/girlfriends over for a movie night/Netflix binge. I know that’s what I’m doing tonight…some gals are coming over and we are watching the Fuller House series that releases today once our kiddos are asleep. I’m keeping it low key (we will all be in our yoga pants and PJs anyways, and will plan to serve some finger foods, chips & dip and something sweet- like Betty Crocker™ Soft Baked Bars that I picked up from Walmart.)
These tasty treats come in three flavors: Betty Crocker™ Sweet Rewards Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar, Caramel Brownie and Butterscotch Blondie. And they are all utterly delicious. They are soft baked that really deliver and taste super indulgent and are convenient in a single serve bar—great for on-the-go, or as a treat at home when that sweet tooth hits and you don’t have the patients (or ingredients) to make homemade chocolate chip cookies or brownies but still want the taste.
3) Enjoy some girls time.
It’s important to spend time with your girlfriends. Although I may not be able to meet up with them as often as I’d like, it’s great to get together and catch each other up on life, work, kids, etc. I try to grab a drink with friends about once a month, and we do it on the weeknights when there are typically specials. It’s nice to have a couple hours to break up the week like that! Another option? Take part in a monthly book club. Not only will you read some great books, but connecting with buds once a month is always a fun time (and usually there is food involved— and I’d totally bring these Betty Crocker Soft Baked Bars on a cute platter with some fun garnishes…easy and delish!)
4) Get active!
Whenever I get the opportunity for “me” time, I often turn to exercise. It’s rejuvenating in so many ways. Whether it’s a barre class, a solo run with my music on the treadmill or a workout DVD, it relieves my stress and makes me feel like me. And I can’t wait to get outside with Bryce and the jogging stroller and hit the trails—it’ll be great!
5) Host a party.
Don’t worry…you don’t have host a Pinterest-perfect party that costs an arm and a leg. Ain’t nobody got time for that! Instead, do something fun and practical- like a freezer meal party! Invite a few friends, and each one brings their favorite freezer meal recipe and the ingredients for as many are in attendance. Then you spend time together chopping and prepping your meals and each person walks away with a set of freezer ready meals for busy nights. Productive AND fun! Or, host a clothing & accessories swap amongst your friends and clean our your closet of things you no longer wear and pick up some new things for nada!
So there you go! A few budget-friendly ideas for some mama “me” time! What kinds of things do enjoy during “me” time or to treat yourself?
